Green Markets for the Electric Grid

Jim Price, Senior Advisor in Market Development and Analysis, CAISO

The California ISO provides open, non-discriminatory transmission access, managing approximately 80% of California’s electricity load. These responsibilities cover reliability, grid and market operations, market development, grid planning, outage coordination, and market monitoring. After an overview of market operations, this presentation covers present operational challenges (for example, forecasting demand and renewable resource output), changes over the next 10 years, operational and market enhancements to support renewable integration, and making the complex data and market model accessible to the general audiences of electric producers and consumers.

Jim Price is a Senior Advisor in Market Development and Analysis at the California Independent System Operator (ISO), providing technical analysis and policy development for integration of energy and ancillary service products in the wholesale market, and working with other organizations on regional markets, solutions for integrating large amounts of renewable resources, and reducing market inefficiencies. He received his B.S. from California Institute of Technology, and M.S. and Ph.D. from Stanford University in infrastructure planning and management, and came to the California ISO after working for the California Public Utilities Commission, and California Office of Economic Policy, Planning, and Research, in areas including market development and rate design.
